A welcome return

December 2008

Recruitment consultant Emma Sikora has returned to her former employer Fresh Recruits following two years working in HR for a software company in Surrey.

The 27-year-old graduate first worked for the recruitment agency in 2005-06 and says she is delighted to be back in her adopted home town.

Originally from Ashford in Middlesex, Emma studied a communications degree at Bournemouth University and went on to pass her REC Foundation during her first stint at Fresh Recruits.

“Recruitment is busy even in these difficult times,” she said. “Highly skilled people who have been made redundant are being hunted by those companies still recruiting.”

Managing success

July 2008

SHE’S the longest serving member of staff at Fresh Recruits, and now Shelley McCue has become the agency’s office manager.

Starting as an administrative temp at the recruitment firm in 2003 – a year after the independent agency was launched - Shelley has moved up through the admin ranks to her pivotal new role.

As office manager Shelley is the firm’s backbone ensuring the smooth running of the team’s workplace, as well as the support functions for the temp and permanent job seekers on Fresh Recruits’ books.

She is also about to start a management course specifically designed for her by Wessex Training.

“I’m proud that Fresh Recruits and I have grown side by side,” said Shelley.

“I’ve developed personally during the past six years, gaining valuable experience and knowledge along the way.

“I’ve also seen the agency go from strength to strength in a very competitive market.” She says Fresh Recruits is more than ready to weather the oncoming credit crunch storm.

“Luckily we have such a broad range of clients, and vacancies are still extremely busy,” she said.

“But we have seen an increase in the last few weeks in the number of candidates registering due to redundancy.

“More and more employers are looking to temporary workers as a way to meet their business demands while keeping their permanent staff head count down.

“This is creating an increase in our temp side of the business.”

Leading recruitments standards

July 2008

RAISING standards and excellence in the region’s recruitment industry is driving a major training programme for staff at a Bournemouth agency.

The majority of the team at Fresh Recruits has prestigious REC credentials, and the few consultants without them are starting theirs this month. (SEPT)

One employee is also taking a different route - a management program specifically designed for her by Wessex Training.

The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) is the UK’s professional body representing the interests of the recruitment industry, as well as benchmarking exacting standards and codes of practice.

“We view training as crucial to the success of our company and level of service we give our clients, as well as for the personal and professional growth of our team,” said Jo Keating, Fresh Recruits managing director.

“It is an ongoing process. There are many options out there, and ways of financing them.

“I’m extremely lucky because my team is so enthusiastic about training.”

Funding for a percentage of the REC training has come from Business Link, and Train to Gain under the umbrella of the Learning & Skills Council.

Business Link has also provided 50 per cent towards the cost of the firm’s coveted Investor’s In People award, granted three years ago.

Tackling Recruitment Head On!

November 2007

Known for their dynamic and wide ranging advertising, Fresh Recruits Managing Director, Jo Keating decided to veer away from traditional advertising themes for this latest campaign.

“We realise that to maintain our position as a leading recruiter, we need to continually be attracting the best candidates to fulfil our clients’ needs and expectations. We like to be original with our marketing and believe new strategies like this set us apart from the rest. As a local company, it is a pleasure to support local teams as well as working closely with businesses in the area.”

The new bus design accompanies traditional advertising on local radio, in local media and in trade press.

Jo Keating, seen here with the eye-catching bus and the 1st and 2nd Team Captains of East Dorset Rugby Club, Morgan Leadbitter and Lawrence Engle , believes that advertising is vital to the success of any business:

“We are aiming for a high visibility in Dorset as we want to be the recruiter that springs to mind first for both candidates and clients. It is also good if we can bring a smile to people’s faces, and the bus certainly does that!”

July 2007

They have grown from a start-up in a small office with just two members of staff, to a profitable, successful business with its team now in double figures. The coming financial year is on track to show an increase in turnover of 30% based on 2006 figures. Each year the company has continued to grow and builds on its reputation as one of Dorset most successful agencies.

Marketing is paramount to Fresh Recruits and July also sees the launch of their next marketing campaign. From an advertising back ground herself, Jo Keating, Managing Director of Fresh Recruits is a firm believer of the power of media and feels that Fresh Recruits would not be where they are today without the continuous investment in Marketing. She comments, “Although multi-medium advertising is not a cheap method of marketing your business, I see it as a vital way of raising awareness of your products or service. Every business has their target markets and it is important to identify from the outset the best ways to reach these”.

As a commercial recruitment specialist that is still relatively young, Fresh Recruits sees a carefully planned marketing strategy as essential for building the foundations of their successful business.

Fresh Recruits also uses its enviable central location, set a distance away from other recruitment agencies in Bournemouth, with its bright shop frontage as a distinct advertising tool in itself.

For all business’s to be successful, dedication, commitment and focus are all required from those involved and it certainly is not an easy ride, with all businesses experiencing ups and downs along the way. Fresh Recruits Launch New Look Recruitment Website

March 2007

March sees the launch of Fresh Recruits new website, the site is aimed at both clients and candidates providing an insight in to Fresh Recruits and the services offered.

Rachel Gulwell, Senior Consultant at Fresh Recruits feels that the Internet is absolutely essential for today’s job seekers:
“The benefits of online job searches are fantastic. The Net is an excellent shop window for us to attract candidates, the key benefits include cost, speed and global access. Speed is an important factor as it is widely acknowledged that online ads tend to generate almost immediate response speeding up the recruitment cycle.”

Online Recruitment is now the most favoured method for people to find and apply for new jobs. Whether via an agency, online job board or company websites, online methods are the most successful way of attracting candidates to new jobs.

The speed, efficiency and discreet nature of using the Internet to job hunt make it the option of choice. When already in full-time employment, time is precious for job seekers and using the internet ensures that time is used effectively and wisely.

Rachel continues “When looking for a new job it can be hard for people to find the time to job hunt. The Internet not only provides a speedy solution to this, but also acts as a huge information source. It enables people not just to apply for jobs, but also to conduct research into potential new employers, all at the click of a button. Without the internet job seeking would be much harder – and slower - for all those involved in the recruitment process”.

Fresh Recruits website provides job seekers with a full list of all positions that the team are currently recruiting for on behalf of their client base. Alongside this, useful information can be found on how to apply for jobs, how to write CVs and advice on how to stand out in a competitive marketplace. The team uses online job boards to ensure that their clients have access to the best candidates with the relevant skills and experience that they require.

The Business Magazine March 07

February 2007

“Being an advocate of training myself, I understand and appreciate the importance and benefits of training and motivating your staff", says Jo Keating Managing Director of Fresh Recruits "Personal development should feature highly in a professional working environment. With the right training and development not only do I get the most out of my team it also means they get more out of their roles as well. At Fresh Recruits we recognise the importance and benefits of training and that is why I ensure all my team are given the opportunity to study for the REC Certificate in Recruitment Practice, which gives them an in-depth understanding of the recruitment marketplace. Training not only gives an individual more confidence to do their job to their highest ability but it also boosts the morale within the working group and lowers staff turnover".

Jo continues, "In order to build upon or unlock a member of your team's potential it is essential that they receive an adequate amount of quality training, allowing them to understand their job to a greater degree and further themselves within a role. In this challenging and ever progressive professional world you need staff that are knowledgeable and reliable to maintain and help develop the successful running of your establishment. This can not only alleviate pressure on individuals but also helps to create a dynamic working environment. Research by the Learning and Skills Council shows that staff training plays a key role in increased job satisfaction with 90% of employees and 92% of employers agreeing that it makes a difference. Two thirds of employees say they worked harder as a result of learning new skills. These are huge statistics with both staff and employers acknowledging the benefits as a result of the management of staff training. An increase in productivity and improved staff retention are just a few of the advantages when it comes to educating and sharpening the skills of your team," Jo summaries, "Training can be expensive but it is an investment in your business as well as your team, it's also a lot less expensive than having to manage a high staff turnover." EDRFC were not the only ones to benefit from their support – Fresh Recruits is also proud to be sponsoring Bournemouth Hockey Club, demonstrating strong support for sport in the local community and borough of Dorset.

Fresh Recruits were announced as the new team sponsor as East Dorset RFC was promoted into Hampshire 2 at the end of last season. With the new kit, Fresh Recruits hope their support can give the team the extra ‘push’ in their demanding games. The Fresh team is looking forward to being more actively involved with the local teams and embraces success through sport in their local area. As a recruiter of choice for local businesses, Fresh Recruits saw it as a natural step to partner local sports teams too.

Open All Hours!

April 2006

Fresh Recruits’ first dedicated Open Day went with a bang! Their dedicated Open Day for client RIAS was a great success for all parties involved, and record numbers of candidates came down to the offices to register their interest.

The Open Day will be first of many for the Bournemouth based recruitment agency, who are using them as an opportunity to encourage candidates to come in without an appointment. Extending opening until 8pm allows candidates to register outside of working hours, as job-hunting whilst in employment can be extremely tricky. Open Days are going to be held on the LAST THURSDAY of every month, so mark the day in your diary!

The qualified team at Fresh Recruits helped candidates to look at the range of career opportunities that RIAS has to offer, carefully going through positions and the application process with them. Along with RIAS, candidates were able to investigate a range of other job opportunities in Dorset and Hampshire.

Rachel Gulwell, Senior Consultant co-ordinated the Open Day:
“We are very pleased with the success of the Open Day. Our organised approach ensured that the day went smoothly and allowed candidates to come down to the offices at their convenience. We’re already planning the next Open Day and look forward to boosting the RIAS teams with the high calibre of candidates we have managed to attract”.

As part of the assessment process, the whole team was interviewed for their thoughts and perceptions on business operations, on their contribution to the company and their understanding of the business.

Jo Keating, Managing Director commented, “We are very proud to have attained this special status as a result of our combined efforts and hard work. It represents the focus we put into developing our team, making sure they are rewarded and we like to think that this is reflected in the service that we give our clients”.

Committing to the standard has allowed Fresh Recruits to look ahead to the future, and a prosperous 2006.

Katie Diamond, Sales Director, seen here alongside the eye-catching buses, believes that advertising is vital to the success of a young business:

“We are aiming for a high visibility in Dorset as we want to be the recruiter that springs to mind first for both candidates and clients. It is also good if we can bring a smile to people’s faces, and the buses certainly do that!”

November 2004

As they enter the second quarter of their third year in business, Bournemouth based recruitment agency Fresh Recruits has their most thrilling development; their latest acquisition - brand new commercial premises of 1250sq foot in one of the hottest areas of town.

With state of the art technology and enough space for 10 consultants and 3 support staff (including 26 available phone lines) this large and stylish office space also boasts an impressive shop frontage, Fresh Recruits will have a high street presence for the first time in their history, allowing them to make even more of an impact with candidates and clients in one of the most rapidly developing parts of Bournemouth.

They are also continuing to grow at an astonishing rate, with the number of vacancies and candidates increasing week on week. More staff will be employed before the new year, and internal staff promotions and training schedules will create internals vacancies as the team grows.

Business is Booming for Bournemouth's Brightest Sparks

October 2004

After the period of economic uncertainty, which swept the UK 2003, recruitment in 2004 has seen a upsurge in private sector activity and strengthening work output has lead to employers taking on more staff to cope with an increased workload in a number of industries, and thanks to the invigorated financial markets, recruitment figures in the south of England look set to expand across major sectors in the coming months.

Figures from the latest REC/Deloitte Report on Jobs support the area's growing confidence, and the rates of both permanent staff placements and temporary staff billings continues to accelerate. This overall current feel good factor is great news for the recruitment industry - but one Bournemouth based recruitment agency are quite used to such rosy prospects, and have been basking in the sunshine of success since they opened their doors back in June 2002.

Currently enjoying their most profitable period to date, Fresh Recruits are breaking records and has grown beyond all expectations in the last two years. Turnover is increasing year on year, with a substantial rise planned for 2005. The company has placed an incredibly impressive 400 candidates within the Dorset and Hampshire area to date, with vacancies ranging from juniors positions through to senior personnel.

Now an independent market leader in Dorset and Hampshire, Fresh Recruits have made it their aim to be the best agency in the recruitment business and outshine their competitors on every level, constantly honing and improving the variety of services on offer to clients and striving to attract the very best candidates in the area.

As they enter their third year in business, Fresh Recruits are continuing to grow at an astonishing rate. Initially employing just 2 members of staff, those early days of hard graft and successful contract negotiation by the company’s founders have increased employee numbers by a massive 900 per cent, while client figures have grown to exceed all expectations.

Women in Business

August 2004

Starting your own business can be as risky as walking a tightrope, especially if you are a woman. Statistics show that Women these days have to fight harder for success in business and only 14% of all full time businesses in the UK are majority female owned. But the number of self employed women in the UK is growing and now stands at 30% which is up from 19% in 1979, so things are changing.

It is far more difficult to set up your own recruitment business now than it was just a decade ago, due to the increased competition in the marketplace from established agencies and the relatively new online recruiters. Jo Keating, Managing Director of Bournemouth’s Fresh Recruits, knows exactly what it’s like to be a woman in business and take the plunge and start up on your own, like other entrepreneurial individuals keen to go out on their own because of the freedom and rewards it brings, although she would say; it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. Recognising the difficulties and risks associated with setting up a new business from scratch, Fresh Recruits and their founding all girl team have taken local recruitment by storm.

Diamond Girl

April 2004

After a whirlwind eight months with Bournemouth recruitment consultancy Fresh Recruits, Senior Consultant Katie Diamond is celebrating her new job as Branch Manager at their town centre offices.

With a wealth of experience in the recruitment industry and a dynamic and motivating business attitude, Katie's new appointment looks set to take the successful independent recruitment agency on to even greater things.

Fresh Recruits Director Jo Keating is certain that this new appointment is a key factor in the company's continued expansion. "Katie has made an indelible impression upon our business, and her go getting attitude has helped Fresh Recruits to win new clients week after week. Whilst managing our existing client base of major blue chip companies and successful independent clients, Katie has been consistently focused upon driving her team forward to an incredibly high professional standard, to such an extent that we are now competing with national rather than local recruitment agencies.

Already a market leader in Dorset and Hampshire, Katie believes Fresh Recruits success in the marketplace is down to her team of consultants, who share the same vision in making Fresh Recruits one of the south's largest independent agencies.

"I am passionate about the business, and have endeavoured to make our name synonymous with excellence,' said Katie. 'The service offered to our clients is second to none, and we pride ourselves on being the best in the business. Our strong and dedicated team of consultants provides each and every client with an efficient, effective and independently flexible service and many of our new clients approach us after a first class recommendation from one of our existing satisfied clients. "
